Why "Answers on a Postcard"?

Jo Sidebottom I wanted the experience of doing a regular blog, but unlike some of my pals I don't have a life or job filled with humorous and interesting anecdotes. The thought of coming up with entertaining stories regularly was quite daunting. "Answers on a Postcard" was born when I had the idea of asking myself a handful of questions each week, some serious and some more frivolous, and trying to keep the responses pithy and concise. Please feel free to leave any comments about my blog on my Guestbook page.

Best day this week
I think Saturday was the best day this week.  It was quite leisurely, although we were very brave and did a Tesco run – would normally avoid weekends as it’s bedlam, but there was only one sachet of cat food left.  Mid afternoon we drove up to Nottingham in preparation for a friend’s Halloween party in the evening.  The party itself was very pleasant and our hotel was nice, so all in all an enjoyable day.

Best decision of the week
Not mine, but someone else’s: to renew a colleague’s contract in one of the regional patches that I cover, to avoid me having to take on all 40-odd trusts on my own in addition to the 32 I already have in London.  She re-starts on 1st November, hurrah!

Best work activity of the week
It was an incredibly busy week work-wise, so every day was satisfying to get through.  The week finished very successfully with a presentation to a new group about the benefits of our sy...

Best day this week
Bizzarely, I think Tuesday, the day of my uncle’s funeral.  Despite the sadness of the occasion, it was lovely to see Derry and my Irish cousins again, and to reminisce self-indulgently about the old days.  He’d asked for similar arrangements to those requested by my dad five years ago: private family service and committal in the morning, with a service of thanksgiving in the afternoon.  The service was in the house, followed by a committal in the city cemetery, then a f...

Best day this week
Friday was good – finished course preparation on Thursday so felt less pressurised, got to my morning meeting in good time and got on with some work.  Met an old colleague and had a good gossip with her.  A couple of good meetings, and then home by 3.30 and just checked email and called it a day.  All followed by a leisurely evening with a nice meal and some TV.

Best work activity of the week
It was interesting to meet someone this week whom I’ve been aware of for a couple...

Best day this week
Best evening really….my brother’s 50th birthday party on Saturday night.  To be honest, I expected to stay a couple of hours because I didn’t think I’d know many people, and it was going to be a noisy and very drunken evening.  However, we got home at 4am after an evening filled with more laughter than I’ve had for ages.  Admittedly most of it was at my brother and nephew’s alcohol-fuelled antics.  It was like going back thirty years to parties when we were young...
